This series of posts has a problem, in that I'm restricted to only including music that's been commercially released... which is really annoying in the case of the wondrous Jessica Alba. It means that the terrific themes from the '90s Flipper (there were two) are off-limits, as are David Newman's score for Never Been Kissed, Joel McNeely's work on Dark Angel (although the opening ditty gets a look-in, even if the only episode of either season to give it a respectable airing is "Love Among The Runes") and - less regrettably, it has to be said - anything from Robert Rodriguez's Machete. But do not think the Alba's most frequent collaborator will go unrepresented...

The Hayden Panettiere Is One Of My Berserk Buttons Post.

Five years ago was the last time I went to London Film And Comic Con, when it went something like this. As proof that history doesn't always repeat itself and that you can learn from your mistakes, this time around I left very, very early on Saturday morning. How early? I arrived at 6 AM.

Three hours later, they let me and the other prepaid ticket holders in and I headed straight for the back of the Olympia Grand Hall to get a hold of a queue number - last time it was in the 500s, this time it was 37. Cue the first of a series of waiting games as in spite of the hefty amount of guests there, including assorted Game Of Thrones persons, Anthony Head, wrestlers like Mickie James, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Kevin Sorbo, Holly Marie Combs - the only person other than guess who that I could have been tempted to join a queue for - Gillian "No mortals allowed to see her signing" Anderson, Jeri "See previous in-between-names bit" Ryan and, of course, Jonesy from the Police Academy movies, there was only one person I was there for. The same person for whom I went last time; Hayden Panettiere.

Well, duh.

 

My poor screwed-up brain being what it is, I didn't ask Hayden to further personalise the above during our very brief but friendly chat - and I have to admit if I'd known she wasn't crazy about the picture chosen I wouldn't have brought it along. (Also, please excuse the rubbish scanning - if I ever re-edit this post I'll do it again.) But she was cheerful about it, and I certainly got more time with her than the insanity in 2007. And this time I got to shake her hand (physical contact; always a plus). Her beautiful, tiny, doll-like hand... which I understand had some plasters on it later in the day because she had to sign so much! (It was quieter on Sunday, when I wasn't there alas, but that's to be expected.) Add to this her reportedly having a bad back that day and it's amazing there weren't umpteen reports of her throwing hissy-fits disproportionate to her size. Especially since the place was crowded on Saturday and not exactly low-temperature..

So cue further waits (and stopping off at the stand for the guy from The Cinema Store to buy The Avengers - much Alan Silvestri goodness therein) until the photoshoot. On the one hand, we were pretty much rushed in and out with not much interaction (although I did notice Hayden's face starting a bit when she saw me - maybe she recognised me from earlier, for good or ill!). On the other hand, I can understand why it was like that with a ton of people with tickets and only just over an hour (as a post on the Showmasters forum pointed out, you'd think they'd have split Miss Panettiere's photo session like they did wth Gillian, Jeri and Holly Marie Combs). Hayden was sitting down here unlike last time, but how'd you like to stand up for 60-plus minutes in that state? Also, even with her cute little behind being on a high chair yours truly had to crouch down to fit into the above, what with my being a biggish fellow and Hayden being approximately the size of Smurfette. (Not the greatest picture - or scan, I have to admit. Especially that thing next to the fragrant Hayden.)

Biggest complaint about the day had to be the prices for food, so we won't bring them up.

More waiting, and taking in the sights (some very attractive cosplayers there), before the paid talk in area B (moved from C for some reason - maybe it should have stayed there and been closed off from people getting a free preview, hmm Showmasters?). It would have been nice if it had been filmed like at other cons not least in the US, and if there had been better organisation - there weren't enough seats for everyone and sound problems, and on top of that the person who had to organise the actual session was... Hayden herself, due to mikes not being long enough. So those of us with questions basically had to go into the aisle, which I'm told hurt the views of some in the audience - I can only apologise, being one of those who went up! But no complaints about the lady herself, who was as charming and likeable as ever with the queries (about Nashville, Kingdom Hearts, whales, Heroes - of course - and, this being Hayden Panettiere, the odd bit of chatting-up; this last from a guy who wanted a shout-out to his brother. "I'm single," he told her. "I'm not," she pointed out).

And me? Well, I began by telling her that she has a very sexy voice ("Ooh, thank you!") before admitting to being a bit nervous, whereupon she told me I shouldn't be what with our size differences. So then I asked her if there was anything she'd done career-wise that she was ashamed of, and she replied that she'd been acting for so long that there were obviously things which hadn't turned out as expected but nothing she really regretted; I then asked her if there were any British TV shows she didn't like. Yes, DIDN'T like (I think it's only fair that Americans get to complain about British shows, as the reverse has been true for ages). Hayden didn't name or shame anything, as she 'fessed up to not being that au courant with them - but we both agreed that with a lot of Americans loving British shows and vice versa, it's a case of the grass being greener.

Anyway, it was a lovely Saturday, and if I could have gone on Sunday for more Hayden exposure I would've... maybe the next time she's here (which hopefully will be before 2017!). And I have to admit I loved how she had her back to the audience when she came on stage; let's just say Mitch Pileggi was not the only person checking out her behind.

Don't diss Hayden around me, thanks. And thank you for everything, Hayden.

P.S. Apparently she was flirting with Bernard Cribbins on Sunday. Bernard Cribbins. I know she likes older men, but...

Since Scarlett Johansson is the oldest of the women in this series so far at the ripe old age of 27, and since many of her movies (the gorgeous, pouting Scarlett rarely does scripted television with the exception of her Robot Chicken appearances - and the pilot for the TV version of The Client) have had soundtrack releases, we've got the longest disc so far. Not included in this lineup: North, Home Alone 3 or My Brother The Pig (thus preventing the inclusion of a pre-Lost Michael Giacchino). The Music From The Films Of Hayden Panettiere Post.

There are two things that I like; film soundtracks and attractive celebrity women. Finally, something that combines the two. Kicking off this series of posts is one for one of the two women this blog's named for - and since Cindy Crawford has hardly any screen scripted work to her name (and no related soundtracks, unless La-La Land has released Mark Mancina's Fair Game without announcing it), that means Hayden Panettiere.

Not included: songs licensed for inclusion in any of her films (or TV shows), although we'll make an exception for one artist. Also not included: David Newman's The Affair Of The Necklace because she only appears in the prologue as the young Hilary Swank (which is weird considering how they look now, but anyway), or any others - like Message In A Bottle - where she isn't a main character. (Exception: the track from Dinosaur, because it's too darn good.) Alttiere Factor: Natalie Zea (ex-Justified), and allegedly Maggie Grace.
Chances Of Coming To The UK: It's a show involving serial killers. Of course it'll find a British buyer.

What's It About? Three siblings who'll inherit their late dad's fortune - although strings are very attached.

What's It About? The day-to-day life of the First Family of the US of A. The President this time around is Bill Pullman, who doesn't have to worry about aliens this time (Independence Day).
Will I Check It Out? Given that previous sitcoms set in the White House include Hail To The Chief, Mr. President and Cory In The House, the signs aren't great.
Alttiere Factor: The First Daughter in this scenario is Martha MacIsaac (replacing Brittany Snow), so not bad.
Chances Of Coming To The UK: If it's as good as the other sitcom Jason Winer's worked on lately (Modern Family), pretty good.

Animal Practice

What's It About? A top veterinarian whose new boss is his ex. Cue romantic and animal shenanigans.

Alttiere Factor: The clear winner here (will all due respect to Laura Benanti) is Allison Miller, although her last two series were Kings and Terra Nova. Third time lucky?

Alttiere Factor: The feminist is Collette Wolfe from Hot Tub Time Machine, Young Adult and (though not now) Cougar Town. They were hardly likely to cast Patricia Routledge, were they now?

What's It About? You know how at the end of Escape From L.A. Snake Plissken causes the world's biggest power cut? This is that and what happens 15 years later, but without Snake Plissken. And with better results for the audience, hopefully. Executive produced by creator Eric Kripke (Supernatural - and Boogeyman), J.J. Abrams and pilot director Jon Favreau.
Will I Check It Out? You know, I may just will.
Alttiere Factor: This being a (part-)Bad Robot enterprise, pretty high - Andrea Roth, Tracy Spiridakos and Anna Lise Phillips.

What's It About? Anne Heche has a near-death experience and then discovers that she's a prophet. As in getting messages from God. By the way, this is a comedy.
Will I Check It Out? Provided it's more like Joan Of Arcadia than The Book Of Daniel.
Alttiere Factor: Not bad with Alex Breckenridge, Heather Burns and Madison Davenport.
Chances Of Coming To The UK: It's suitably unreverential-sounding that this could have a shot.

What's It About? The titular apartment building owned by Terry O'Quinn and Vanessa Williams (John Locke and Wilhemina Slater!), the new managers of which find out that it's worth your soul to stay there.
Will I Check It Out? It sounds up my street.
Alttiere Factor: In addition to the ever-yummy Vanessa, Mercedes Masohn and Rachael Taylor (as Mrs. Manager) bear investigation.
Chances Of Coming To The UK: Based on Alloy's previous track record on British TV, it's likely. ITV2, SkyLiving, Watch...

Family Tools
From The Good Folks At: The Mark Gordon Company, ITV Studios America and ABC Studios.
What's It About? A colossal screwup has to take over the family business from the great J.K. Simmons. Based on the UK sitcom White Van Man (this translation's original title as well, before becoming Red Van Man and finally what it settled on).
Will I Check It Out? Very unlikely.
Alttiere Factor: Danielle Nicolet and Leah Remini, stand up and be counted.
Chances Of Coming To The UK: Not great.

How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life)

What's It About? Divorced mother who's somewhat uptight, living with her parents who... aren't.
Will I Check It Out? I don't really know.
Alttiere Factor: Sarah Chalke is the person taking the title lesson.

Last Resort

From The Good Folks At: Big Sun Productions, MiddKid Productions and Sony PicturesTelevision.

What's It About? A nuclear submarine refuses to fire on Pakistan, the captain is relieved of command and the XO is now in charge - making it rougher when the sub and all who sail in her winds up on an exotic island accused of being enemies of the state. It's Gilligan's Island meets political thrillers...

Will I Check It Out? It's highly likely.

Alttiere Factor: Autumn Reeser, Dichen Lachman and Jessy Schram? Sold.

Chances Of Coming To The UK: Shawn Ryan's previous series The Shield, The Unit and The Chicago Code all did. I see no reason why his streak should end with this. Sky One's a possibility.

 

Malibu Country

From The Good Folks At: Laura Ziskin Productions and Twentieth Century Fox Television.

What's It About? Aspiring country singing star Reba McEntire walks on out her actual country singing star/cheating husband and moves to California with her mum and family. This is the second time she's played a character called Reba, by the way.

Will I Check It Out? If I get a chance, because I like Reba.

Alttiere Factor: Juliette Angelo looks WAY too young, so it's down to Sara Rue.

Chances Of Coming To The UK: Her last sitcom never did, alas...

Mistresses

From The Good Folks At: Ecosse Films and ABC Studios.

What's It About? Four female friends, who are all in one way or another... guess. ABC's second series here to be based on a British show.

Will I Check It Out? Unlikely, out of principle.

Alttiere Factor: Alyssa Milano would be enough by herself, but throw in Yunjin Kim, Rochelle Aytes and Jes Macallan...

Chances Of Coming To The UK: I'm not sure.

Nashville

From The Good Folks At: Walk & Chew Gum, Cutler Productions, Small Wishes, Opry Entertainment, Lionsgate Television and ABC Studios.

What's It About? A drama set in the capital of country music, focusing on star-in-the-descendant Connie Britton and star-in-the-ascendant Hayden Panettiere (the former has to open for the latter on tour, and neither particularly likes the other). Created by Callie Khouri, who we all know and love for Thelma & Louise if not Divine Secrets Of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

Will I Check It Out? What part of "star-in-the-ascendant Hayden Panettiere" do you not understand? We're not all Friday Night Lights fans, you know (certainly not in Britain).

Based on a Dutch show (a rare non-reality series linked to Endemol), and shepherded by Melissa Rosenberg now she's left Dexter Morgan and Bella Swan behind.

From The Good Folks At: Happy Valley Films, Tree Line Film, Arthur Sarkissian Productions and CBS Television Studios.

What's It About? Nothing to do with Las Vegas or the Robert Urich (RIP) show from a pre-grit Michael Mann, this is based on the life of cowboy-turned-Las Vegas Sheriff Ralph Lamb (played here by Dennis Quaid). James Mangold's third stab at TV (after Men In Trees and NYC 22), and GoodFellas' Nicholas Pileggi is involved as well behind the camera.

Will I Check It Out? I might.

From The Good Folks At: Bonanza Productions Inc., Berlanti Productions, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Television.

What's It About? Where Aquaman failed, the Green Arrow succeeded; this is about a bow-and-guess-what wielding superhero.

Will I Check It Out? I don't seem to have done so for other DC-based live-action shows of late other than Human Target, and the involvement of Greg Berlanti doesn't help after No Ordinary Family...

Alttiere Factor: ...but on the other hand, Willa Holland and Susanna Thompson have powers of their own.

Chances Of Coming To The UK: Extremely good.

Beauty & The Beast

From The Good Folks At: Take 5 Productions, Whizbang Films and CBS Television Studios.

What's It About? This was one of two series with that title in line for the 2012-13 season; ABC's was the one that didn't make the cut. Unlike the Alphabet's version, this one is a redo of the cult 1987-90 series, with the new Vincent being a genetically altered war veteran and the new Catherine being a cop. So probably no Tunnel People (or wondrous, three-times-Emmy-winning music either).

Will I Check It Out? Well, this sounds "darker" and "edgier" than the original romantic show, which went "darker" and "edgier" itself in its final season... which turned out to be the reason why it was its final season.

Alttiere Factor: Kristin Kreuk returns to the CW to step into Linda Hamilton's shoes, and Nicole Gale Anderson is her sister (the amusingly-named - if you're a fan of Heathers - Heather Chandler).

Chances Of Coming To The UK: It's not impossible.

The Carrie Diaries

From The Good Folks At: Fake Empire and Warner Bros. Television.

What's It About? It's about Carrie Bradshaw in her teenage years, and thus it's the CW doing for Sex And The City what Smallville did for Superman.

Will I Check It Out? Oh, please.

Alttiere Factor: AnnaSophia Robb is our proto-Sarah Jessica Parker, and Chloe Bridges and Freema Agyeman are with this as well.

Chances Of Coming To The UK: Guaranteed. And given which channel the parent series was a big hit over here for, my money's on it being on E4's or even Channel 4's lineup (you seriously think they'll let ITV2 anywhere near this?).

Cult

From The Good Folks At: Rockne S. O'Bannon Television, Fake Empire, CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television.

What's It About? A TV production assistant and a blogger look into fans of a hit crime-centric show who might be copying what they see too closely...

Will I Check It Out? I may do so.

Alttiere Factor: The presence of Alona Tal and Jessica Lucas doesn't hurt.

Chances Of Coming To The UK: Not bad. SkyLiving or maybe Syfy?

Emily Owens, M.D.

From The Good Folks At: The Dan Jinks Company, CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television.

What's It About? It's the second series this season with a Heroes alumnus. But the presence of Jack "Mr. Bennet" Coleman notwithstanding, it's about a female medical student (Mamie Gummer, daughter of Meryl Streep no less!) working as a hospital intern. Formerly called First Cut; thankfully they gave it a new title beginning with E so I didn't have to move this up.

Will I Check It Out? Not sure...

Alttiere Factor: ...but my reaction on looking up cast member Aja Naomi King was "WHOA!" Not bad to have The Event's Necar Zadegan along either. And Mamie isn't exactly ugly herself...

Chances Of Coming To The UK: It might.
